Masquerade raises funds for theater
A masquerade will benefit Waimea’s Kahilu Theatre from 6 p.m. to midnight Dec. 6 at the Hilton Waikoloa Village Grand Ballroom. The celebration begins with cocktails and a silent auction. Dinner begins at 7 p.m. and will be followed by a Michael Feinstein performance and dancing.
Tickets can be purchased at kahilutheatre.org. Individual tickets are $150 for theater members or $185 for nonmembers. Dance party tickets only are $50. Coastal cleanups scheduled
Volunteers and vehicles are needed to clear debris from the rocky Ka‘u coastline during a Hawaii Wildlife Fund cleanup day Saturday. Volunteers should meet at 7:45 a.m. at Waiohinu Park. To reserve a spot, email kahakai.cleanups@gmail.com or call 769-7629.

Library presents natural history talk
Historian and master storyteller Boyd D. Bond will recount the natural history of Hawaii from 3 to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Kailua-Kona Public Library. He will contrast the ecosystems of the different islands, describe changes brought by Polynesian and Western contact, and finally answer the question, “Why are there no hummingbirds in Hawaii?”
The program is sponsored by Friends of the Libraries, Kona and is free.

Christmas in the Country kicks off Friday
The public is invited to usher in the holidays with its annual celebration of Christmas in the Country at Volcano Art Center’s Gallery and Niaulani Campus.
Events begin Friday with an exhibit at the Niaulani Campus in Volcano Village to showcase artists who will teach workshops and classes in the upcoming year. From 2 to 4:30 p.m. are free art activities for adults and children, including make your own holiday card and paint the volcano, in the Hale Hoomana Education Building.
On Saturday, festivities at Volcano Art Center Gallery in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park begin with the wreath exhibit, unique handmade ornaments for sale, demonstrations by well-known local artists, book and print signings and a visit by Santa Claus.
Volcano artist Dietrich Varez and author David Eyre will sign their books and prints from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, and will be joined by Nancee Cline from 1 to 4 p.m, signing her book, “Queen Emma’s Church in Kealakekua, Crossroads of Culture.”
Caren Loebel-Fried will demonstrate block carving and printing from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. She will also sign and personalize her books and prints.
In advance of Volcano Art Center’s 40th anniversary in 2014, a limited edition poster has been created, featuring a photo of the active Halemaumau crater by architect and photographer Boone Morrison. Morrison will be at the gallery to sign posters from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. Posters will be available for purchase at the gallery.
